To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time

Did the title grab your attention????

It grabbed my attention. But the credit goes to Robert Herrick. It’s his title, and it’s his poem!

Was he literally referring to virgins as representing phases of time, or was he inferring that virgins are flower pickers? Is it really the life span of the blossoms, or the need to put a timer on virginity that was his issue? (Well, maybe he didn’t mean to dwell on one or the other. Whatever.)

Either way, the gist of the thing is what matters.

It’s about SEIZING THE MOMENT!!!! Live for the NOW and in the (K)NOW.

Gather ye rose-buds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today
Tomorrow will be dying.
…”

an excerpt from the poem
To The Virgins, To Make Much of Time
by Robert Herrick

Waterhouse thought that the image from Herrick’s poem was worth painting.
